What can be better than traveling to a beautiful city for a weekend getaway? Answer: Doing it all while barely spending a dime. Or shall I say zehn rappen.
My husband and I spend three days in Vienna. Which meant traveling eight hours (each way) by train from Zurich. Yes, 16 hours round trip was a bit much. But we were lucky enough to travel premium class paying only 15% of the actually cost for two round trip tickets. And I found a nice, clean, CHEAP hotel one block away from the Museum Quarters. (Not to toot my own horn, but I am pretty good at finding quality, inexpensive hotels)

Christmas - America vs. Switzerland

A few nights ago, my husband and I attended his company's Christmas party. My husband's boss asked us will we celebrate an American Christmas or a Swiss Christmas once our little one is born. I said, "American." Of course, my husband said, "Swiss."

The dark, chilling figures in soot-covered faces are Samichlaus' helper(s) named Schmutzli. There are many tales surrounding the duties performed by Schmutzli. My husband was raised to believe that he snatches misbehaving children, places them in his sack, and takes them to the forest. Another story claims that he carries a broom of twigs to administer punishment to naughty children.

In recent years, Schmutzli's scary reputation has taken a more positive turn. In some parts of Switzerland, he is viewed simply as Samichlaus' companion and helper. But in the smaller, more conservative regions, the original Schmutzli still exists.

Personally, I prefer the good ole American "naughty or nice" tactic. I can't imagine frightening my little one with the thought of being kidnapped.

Eventually, we concluded that we will combine both Christmas traditions. Problem is, my husband wants to include old school Schmutzli, while I want to exclude his @$$. We'll see who will win this one...

Newsflash...I am no longer a part of the working force. I have been fired. Why? Denn ich bin schwanger -Because I am pregnant. The separation letter states it loud and clear - Reason for Termination : Pregnancy.

You see, in Switzerland, many contractual requirements include a three months probationary period, in which, you can be terminated for any reason. Well since this was a new job and I only worked for a few weeks before being placed on sick leave - it was bound to happen. So about five weeks into my sick leave I got the call, "Sorry, but we have to let you go!"

But I'm cool. In Switzerland, it's pretty typical for women not to work during the pregnancy and for quite some time after the birth.

KiKi In Venice

Well, what can I say about Venice. Ummm...

Well, I LOVED the many different architectural styles, which include Neo-Classical, Byzantine, and Gothic influences. However, I wasn't crazy about the dirt and waste the littered the winding walkways, alleys, and canals. I have to say, I was surprised to see such filth in a highly-visited city. But then again, it was immediately clear how a beautiful city like Venice could turn into a place that makes NYC Chinatown look the cleanest place on Earth - sooooo many tourists. We stayed in the San Marco district where most pedestrians walked shoulder to shoulder. And sadly to say, I can assume that too many visitors did not discard their trash in the hard to find trash receptacles that were sparsely placed throughout each district. And I won't mention the smells that sometimes entered the atmosphere, but this can all be expected when tons of people bombard a city that's the size of a peanut.

Another great aspect about Venice, besides viewing the fantastic architecture, was that it lacked that tourist-ty feel, although everything about it screamed tourist heaven. Yes, it was full of "DITTO" shops and restaurants, but it wasn't Cancun tourist-ty if you know what I mean.

So on a scale of 1-10, I give Venice a 5.5. The architecture makes up five of the overall points.

It's pretty common to see this is Switzerland when we're lucky enough to have hot weather.

Check out the opened back door. The car was unoccupied for hours.

Some Swiss don't have any qualms leaving their car doors not only unlocked, but opened to ensure their dogs get sufficient air. I've seen this on occassion in several parking lots. And my husband laughs every time I lock the door within seconds after entering the car.I can't help it...30+ years of programming.

Only in Switzerland can someone leave their car unattended with an opened door!

INCONSIDERATE SWISS SMOKERS!
Moving to a new country means falling in love with a new way of life. It can also mean, missing the little things... like designated smoking areas. You see, many Swiss people smoke and without designated smoking areas it can be hell. Hell for people like me; a nonsmoker who despises cigarette smoke.

In Switzerland, smokers have no qualms lighting up in shared areas...bus stops, train stations, outdoor cafes, park benches, lakefront picnic areas... If there is a crowd, large or small, you can guarantee several people will light up without consideration of the people around them. Smokers in Switzerland don't care if the person next to them is a baby in a stroller or a fetus in a uterus; a crowd of spectators or a crowded outdoor market. They will smoke anywhere. I'm over this!

FYI- It has only been one year since a nationwide smoking ban prohibiting smoking in public places such as restaurants, bars, cinemas, and schools (YES, SCHOOLS) has been in effect.

Crazy is walking past a school and witnessing teachers and students gathered together smoking outside of the building.
Crazy is having people light up two inches from you at a bus stop.
Crazy is having people blow cigarette smoke in your face while you order a sandwich from an outdoor sandwich stand.

Kiki In Germany - SNOOOOZZZZZZZE!!

My hubby and I decided to spend three days in Munich. I wasn't impressed. But I did enjoy a cheeseburger at Hard Rock Cafe. Living in Switzerland means that I don't have access to "AUTHENTIC" American food. So that cheeseburger hit the spot.

Are charged and taxed for garbage pick up. Let me explain. Swiss cities charge between 120.00 and 150.00 CHF (up to $178) a year for garbage pick up. Plus, in order to throw out the trash, you need to buy region specific garbage bags which have a disposal-tax included . This means that ONE garbage bag may cost between 2.00 and 3.00 CHF. I like this because if you are required by law to pay a ridiculous amout for ONE garbage bag, I can guarantee that you will reduce, reuse, & recycle as much as possible. And this is the kicker...the city that I live in has a weekly garbage pick up. NOT TWICE A WEEK. Trust me, since moving here, I have learned how to limit waste.

Are required as a dog owner to obtain a dog license. And your dog is required to attend a training course with learning programs that include basic obedience exercises (like walking on a leash), socialization of the dog, and a course in town (getting on the elevator, taking the bus and train…). And believe me, the dogs here are so pleasant. The training is evident on the trains and in outdoor public areas.
Are required to get a number plate for your bicycle.
Pay a voluntary church tax. NO COLLECTION PLATES HERE. Each person's religious affiliation is documented through their state and a voluntary tax (up to 3%) is withheld from their annual income.

This Swiss are sooo un-American.

Breakfast in Switzerland

I'm a fan of Swiss food, it's freshness, that is. But compared to American food it can be quite boring. When dining at a restaurant don't expect variety nor the little extras like unique sauces or special ingredients. In my opinion, Swiss restaurants offer the same experience you can get in your own kitchen. So when my husband and I decided to venture out in our new city and grab breakfast, I didn't expect much...as usual...unfortunately.

Our breakfast. Four bread rolls, two cappuccino, one orange juice, and butter and honey which cost .70 CHF = .84 USD each. Condiments are not free in Die Schweiz. The total cost for breakfast 15.70 CHF = 18.77 USD.

I finally made it to Rome and I loved it. The weather was superb - in the 80s, clear blue skies. I was pleased how the city has maintained its historical integrity. In other words, the old looked old not old but refurbished. The best parts were: prices were much more reasonable than I expected; I ate the world's best pasta (al dente, of course), stood in long lines the moved quicker than expected, and saw absolutely gorgeous architecture.

That's me! I'm eating tortiglioni with cherry tomaotes, basil and parmesan cheese.

When Life Gets In The Way

Yes, it has been a while since my last post. But a lot has been going on.

I decided to move closer to my job in Zurich; only to realize that I no longer wanted to work for my employer. So I quit. And I did this before applying for a new gig. I eventually applied for a new teaching position and landed a job in two weeks. In Switzerland, you are required to give 3 months notice when quitting. Can you imagine working day in and day out for 3 months for an employer you no longer care about?

Although, I will be working with children, I was not required to have my background checked. This was also the case for my last job. I'm not sure if this is because I work for a private school or because I have previous experience working as a public school teacher in the US, but I must admit, as a future parent, this doesn't make me feel secure.

I recently moved to a new city in a different canton (state).

I love my new apartment and city. I am centrally located - 30 minutes by train to Zurich, Bern, and Luzern (my favorite Swiss city). And I am near some of my favorite shops - Mango, Manor, and Casa.

The more and more things change, the more and more I continue to feel a part of Swiss culture. I'm starting to look at things the way they are done in Switzerland. My American layers are peeling away faster than I expected.

Skin Color and The Maldives

Before moving to Switzerland, I was told that some Swiss may assume that I am from an African nation. I have experienced this in China; a few Chinese were shocked when I spoke American English. But with a sizable African population in Switzerland, especially in the French part, this is understandable. Since moving here a few people have initiated conversations in French (although, we are in the German part). Most of these people were of African descent (like me!). I guess some people believe white skin equals American skin. And brown skin equals African skin.

This is where my ignorance comes in. Before visiting The Maldives I did very little research about the people, The Maldivians. But according to the brochures they appeared similar to Indonesians. Same skin complexion and facial structures. It was of great surprise to my husband and myself that the people are of similar complexions to Sri Lankans; dark brown or dark reddish tones.

Of course, my first thought was "TYPICAL". Even on the other side of the world skin color plays its part. Most brochures, even the ones featuring our island displayed lighter-skinned people. These same brochures also mentioned visitors' surprise about how beautiful The Maldivians are...and they are! A nation full of attractive people. But back to my point. Why does it take a lighter skinned person to sale a destination? Are the "regulars" not good enough?

I never got into the light-skinned, dark-skinned debate so I'm not going to now. But what the hell.

It wasn't to long ago that my sister-in-law mentioned the same thing after traveling to Nepal. She was surprised about the dark complexions of many Nepalese. You never see that in the magazines nor the brochures. I wonder why?

My ignorance again...I guess like the American and the European nations there are many countries with multiple complexions of people. But for some reason I rarely see the darker-skinned ones...

That's me. I got quite dark. My skin looked flawless!

The White Masai

While I was enjoying my time under the Malediven sun I had time to read a great book, The White Masai by Corinne Hofmann. It's a true story about a Swiss woman who falls in love with a Masai warrior while on vacation in Kenya with her Swiss boyfriend. Within months she leaves her life behind in Europe to marry and live with her warrior in the Kenyan bush.

Here is an editorial review from B&N:

The White Masai combines adventure and the pursuit of passion in a page-turning story of two star-crossed lovers from vastly different backgrounds. Corinne, a European entrepreneur, meets Lketinga, a Samburu warrior, while on vacation in Mombasa on Kenya's glamorous coast. Despite language and cultural barriers, they embark on an impossible love affair. Corinne uproots her life to move to Africa -- not the romantic Africa of popular culture but the Africa of the Masai, in the middle of the isolated bush, where five-foot-tall huts made from cow dung serve as homes. I read the book while relaxing on the beach in Kurumba, The Maldives.

I first learned of this story by watching the movie on a Swiss television channel. It was completely in German, but it totally captivated me. I purchased the book a view days later. Unfortunately, the movie does not do the book justice. Although good, the movie doesn't provide in detail the adventures, heartache, love, and strength the character endures.

So if you have time and are interested in reading a book that is compelling from cover to cover, I suggest The White Masai. Or watch the movie on youtube. Unfortunately, the trailer (below) is in German. But you can find the movie on youtube with English subtitles.

We're Back...ReLaXaTiOn!

Winter in Switzerland has its ups and downs. The upside is that the snow-covered mountains and landscapes are absolutely breathtaking. The downside is that it seems to last forever. Along with the cold temperature and cloudy sky. Weeks go by in Switzerland without sunshine. I don't think I will ever get use to that.

But thankfully, my husband and I were able to escape the seemingly endless chill by vacationing in The Maldives (Malediven). We had such a wonderful time. Eight days of warmth, fun, relaxation, and romance.

The Fabulous Swiss Train...and your first born

I love the rail and bus system in Switzerland. Somehow, the powers that be were able to produce a rail and bus system with an efficient schedule that allows travelers to visit every nook and cranny in the land of cheese and chocolate without waiting more than a few minutes between connections. This includes buses, train, trams, funiculars, and some cable cars.

Over the years, I have read countless articles about Americans wanting and NEEDING a massive, high-speed rail system. Obama wants major changes to the public transport systems, but he will not get it. Ummm. He has also spoken of using the European transit system as an example. But unfortunately, the US doesn't believe in investing in its infrastructure on the same scale as most European countries. This is something an American tourist will spot the moment they land in most European countries. Things here are different, updated, and modern!

But of course this is Switzerland which means it will cost you your first born. Compared to Chicago, a

CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) day pass is $5.75. A Swiss 1 day travel pass is 68.00 CHF ($71) for 2nd class.
CTA monthly pass is $86. A Swiss monthly pass is 578 CHF ($603) for 2nd class.

Granted, the Swiss rail pass I am referring to allows you to travel throughout Switzerland. For a monthly regional pass from point A to point B only, be prepared to cough up 350 CHF ($364).

But I love it and use it everyday. Did I mention that we get a major discount through my husband's job. FYI, the words major and discount are never used in the same sentence in Switzerland. So instead of paying the annual fare of 4850 CHF ($5057) for a first class pass, we pay about 20% of that. I love it!

Funiculars are rail lifts that used on steep hills. This is in the capital city of Bern.

Weekends in Switzerland...The Swiss Alps

I have to admit, I don't do much during the weekends. In Switzerland, the shops close at 4:30 pm on Saturday and are closed all day on Sunday. Besides it's winter, which means extremely cold temperatures and clouds galore. I hate winters here. They are not as bad as Chicago, but they are quite depressing. With that being said... lately, I can brag that we have been blessed with a few cloudless, sunshine-filled days. So what better way to take advantage of the weather than to go to The Swiss Alps.

My husband and I hopped on the fabulous swiss train and made our way thousands of feet above sea level where we viewed breath-taking sights while eating Migros take away sandwiches and sipped on costly cappucino.

UPDATE Does Crime Exist in Switzerland? Ja.

A few months ago I wrote a post about crime in Switzerland http://kiki-in-switzerland.blogspot.com/search/label/Crime. Switzerland has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. With a population of over 7 million people, there were only 51 murders in 2009. That says a lot! Believe me when I say that I feel TRULY safe in Switzerland. But of course, being from NJ via Chicago via Atlanta via NJ, I still keep my guard up. Well, in that post I mentioned that a referendum was scheduled for November which invited Swiss citizens to vote about the immediate deportation of foreigners who comment serious crimes.

Well here's the UPDATE:

53% of voters approved the initiative which calls for the immediate deportation of non-Swiss offenders after serving their jail time without appeal.
This includes those who may have been born and raised in Switzerland, but never obtained citizenship. Unlike the US, people are not granted citizenship just because they are born within Swiss borders.
Crimes may range from murder to breaking and entry and social security fraud.
One in five Swiss residents doesn't have Swiss citizenship.
In 2009, 52 % of crimes were committed by Swiss citizens, 29 per cent were by foreign residents, 4.4 per cent by asylum seekers and 15% by illegal residents.

My Busy Life

I have been quite busy, as usual. I work five days a week and my commute is a killer. I mentioned this in a previous post. I'm serious; it's draining. But thank God, starting next year I will be working less hours per week per my request. Woohoo! What a great New Year's gift to me.

So now I am catching up on a few posts...so here I am...Kiki in Switzerland.

Hockey
It took 30+ years, but I have finally attended a hockey game. Take in a few drinks and a hockey game can be quite exciting. And the Swiss are crazy! They were loud, drunk, and not so friendly to the visiting spectators. Middle fingers were flying everywhere. Accompanied by bad language.

Räbechilbi - The Turnip Festival

Räbechilbi is an event where children and adults sing songs and walk the darkened streets of Zurich holding beautifully decorated lantern turnips. A few Swiss equate it to Halloween. I didn't see any similarities between Räbechilbi and Halloween. But the kids did enjoy it. Maybe that's the similarity.

Funeral

I attended my first Swiss funeral. It was a beautiful, yet, casual affair. The deceased didn't want a fuss.

First, the burial took place. Then the church service. Followed by dinner at a local restaurant.

I met the deceased a few times. She was a lovely woman; 90+ years old. She had several children, many grandchildren; and a few great grandkids. She lived a plentiful live. What more can you ask for.

Christmas Market
Oh, I love Christmas in Switzerland.

First, it's truly about celebrating the birth of Christ. In schools, songs are sang and windows are decorated paying homage to Christ's birth. I love it!

Next, the Christmas Markets are so incredibly alluring. I think European Christmas Markets are known around the world for their beauty. I plan on attending several markets this month and will take many photos for your viewing pleasures.

Finally, Christmas in Switzerland is far from commercial. Simple, low key gifts are truly appreciated. Afterall, Christmas is not about breaking the bank to please others. It's about spending time with loved ones and celebrating the birth of Christ (for believers, that is).

With that being said, I am so upset that I missed Black Friday. I hope many of you got some great deals. Haha.

Say My Name!

Truth is, I can't pronounce my husband's name.

Believe it or not, he has one of the most common names in the world...Michael. But in Swiss German, it is pronounced Mick-ai-el. When making the ck sound in Mick you must pull the sound from the back of your throat; as if you are gurgling. The sound is not too hard and there is sort of a hiss to it. Mi(soft-gurgle, slight hiss)ck-ai-el.

It's not just me. Americans are known for not being able to make this sound. My kiddies always laugh at me because of my pronunciation shortcomings. But I love it when they say my name (soft-gurgle,slight hiss) Ki(soft-gurgle, slight hiss)Ki. I love it!

My Long-Awaited Day Off

I've been ghost for the last few weeks... WHY?
Because of work. I work Mon-Fri, 42.5 hours a week. By Swiss terms this is considered working 100 percent.
100% + long commute = tired ass. Therefore, I'm not in the mood to write new posts on a daily and sometimes on a weekly basis.
But I do enjoy receiving emails inquiring about my life in Switzerland and your plans to visit Die Schweiz. So keep them coming!!

Today, my husband and I hopped the fabulous Swiss train and made our way to Gornergrat, 10,000 feet above sea level. We enjoyed our day. It was quite warm; the sun was shining (I haven't seen the sun in days maybe weeks). There were plenty of American tourists who made their selves known. Many people complain about Americans traveling abroad; Americans are too loud, they complain, they dress, well, sooo American. But it was refreshing to be amongst my people. I say this because I am beginning to get the painful American questions at work. Just to list a few:

Are most Americans overweight?
Is it true that Americans eat McDonalds for dinner? (I find this one to be hilarious.)
Is it true that Americans eat pizza with their hands?
Why do Americans talk loud?

My response to the last question was, "Maybe, because we are more outgoing and inviting. We are not stiff and we appreciate a good time." And the Americans I came across today proved this to be true. They initiated conversation, asked questions, laughed, shared stories of their travels in Europe. I loved it. Moral of the story: I'm American and damn it, SO WHAT!

Solothurn - Swiss City

A few days ago, I went for a stroll through Solothurn. A city located a few minutes from my home. The old town was developed in the 1500s. It's such a beautiful city with centuries-old structures and cobblestone streets. But I must say, at night it can be pretty frightening. There are old statues that appear to glare at everyone who walks by; there are dark, narrow streets and passageways; and there are sounds of creeping doors and heavy footsteps. Added to this is that the old town is quite deserted at night.

Soon, I will continue my Deutsch language lessons in Solothurn which will require me to walk through the old town after dark. I'm not too thrilled about that.
If I'm brave enough to stop or slow down, I will snap a few photos as proof.

It's barely Fall and winter gear is out!. Boots, coats, sweaters... What did I get myself into by moving to Die Schweiz?

I don't like cold weather. And yes, I lived in Chicago for over five years, but I must say that I am glad to be rid of Chitown's brick, frost-bitten weather. But now I'm scared because for the last few weeks I have seen numerous people wearing boots and winter coats; pea coats and a goose down. Yes, a goose down. This is crazy!

Teaching in Switzerland

Before moving to Switzerland, my husband (then fiance) and I decided that I would not work for a while; atleast until I got my feet wet in the land of cheese and chocolate.

Fast forward a few months later (sooner than expected), I now teach 3-5 year olds at a bilingual private school. I assumed that most international and bilingual schools required teachers to speak both German and English. Well, I was wrong. I sent out my resume to 10+ schools; received responses immediately; went on interviews; received multiple offers and landed a job.

So let me run down a few unique differences between Swiss and American schools:

1. My first brush with the education system came not too long after I moved to Switzerland. You can imagine my surprise when I found out that full time cashiers at the local grocery store make more money than I did as a first year teacher in the US. Considering that I worked in one of the highest paying states for teachers, I was blown away.
2. Schools do not have cafeterias. Children go home for at least a 1 1/2+ lunch break. This means that most Swiss mothers do not work or work part time when their children are young. (FYI- the average married Swiss mother works 14 hours a week)
3. There are no government funded day cares nor preschools. They are all private with a typical price range of 1500.00 CHF a month for one day a week attendance to 2700.00 CHF a month for full time attendance.
4. Swiss children do not learn how to read until the age of 6 turning 7; compared to the US which is age 5. Swiss children spend the first few years in school playing, learning to socialize, learning how to behave as students, etc. (I love this!)
5. For public schools and some private, Wednesdays are 1/2 days. Also, many schools operate on block schedules, meaning students may spend all day at school part of the week and 1/2 days the remaining days of the week (hence, again, making it difficult for mom to work).
6. Students spend a lot of time off school grounds on field trips (I think this has to do with the Swiss' love of fresh air) Therefore, on many weekdays I see the streets and trains jammed backed with students and frustrated teachers.
7. The Swiss have many public holidays and school closings (many closings are designed for family holidays - the Swiss are very family-oriented).

This bit American kids will love. The Swiss finish school at the age of 15 or 16 (FYI - 15 being one year before the legal drinking age of 16 for beer, wine, and cider). The catch is that they must work or gain an apprenticeship. If they are unable to get either they must go to school for another year at the parent's expense. Most Swiss students attend vocational school or develop a skill through apprenticeship after graduating.

By reading my earlier posts, it's easy to conclude that I love Die Schweiz. Switzerland is a loooovvvvely country...clean, picturesque, safe, small, diverse. It offers the best transit system in the world. I can go on and on about how much I appreciate this country. However, there are a few things from America that I miss like crazy.

I miss...REAL JUNKFOOD with orange cheese - Cheez Its! and Cheez Doodles. Now I eat fruits, breads and oats for snacks. Really! Who wants to flop on the cozy couch to watch a movie while eating this?

Bircher Muesli (Google photo), uncooked oats, fruits, and nuts.

Add yogurt if you want to live dangerously.

A SUGAR-FILLED BREAKFAST - McDonald's in the morning - hotcakes! Now I eat a croissant, yogurt and coffee or cappuccino. A real American breakfast every now and then will hit the spot.

I also miss whiting fish sandwiches, cheesecake (Sara Lee will do), an Americanized taco (I say Americanized b/c in Mexico you will never find a taco with cheddar cheese and sour cream unless they are catering to tourists), an Americanized baked potato (the Swiss actually eat plain potatoes, give me the Americanized one any day), Nephew Tommy's Prank Calls (the In The Closet call was hi la ri ous!), black and Dominican hair salons, Target, people covering their mouths when they cough, BBC Eastenders and A&E Intervention. There are plenty of websites that offer these shows, but the networks work like dogs to make sure they are taken down. If anyone knows where I can view these shows online, pls drop me a line via email. In the meantime, I watch Absolutely Fabulous and Footballers' Wives over and over again. I love Adina and Patsy. The British seem to have the best shows. I recall reading an article in which Will Smith was campaigning for BBC America to broadcast Eastenders in America. It's nice.

Oh and most of all I miss my mom and lil sis (my twin). Ciao.

How We Spent Our Weekend

Last weekend my husband and I decided to hop the FABULOUS Swiss train and head to Murten. Murten is a quaint village located on Lake Morat (Lake Murten). As I explained before (I think), Switzerland, although small, is a country with four different languages (French, Italian, German, and Romansh) and many different regions. And each region, state or town has its own identity and language (Fr, Ge, It, or Ro) with its own distinct dialect. This means that several locations will have multiply spellings and pronunciations. I'm still trying to get the hang of it! It's like moving to Atlanta and having to figure out that there are more than one Peachtree Stsss... Peachtree St, Peachtree Rd, Peachtree Cir, Peachtree Court, Peachtree Center Ave, W. Peachtree St...

By taking the FABULOUS Swiss train, it's easy to see when we enter different regions. You see, Murten is actually planted where the German and French parts meet. So Murten has a German and French feel. You can see, touch, taste, feel, and hear all that is German and French rolled into one.

Like many Swiss towns or villages, it has a fortified wall. Built centuries ago to keep the outsiders out...for protection. The charm of Murten includes beautiful water fountains (they seem to be everywhere in Switzerland), quaint village shops, and well-maintained centuries-old homes with doors so small only a hobbit can comfortably fit through. This demonstrates how small people were centuries ago.

The following day was Swiss National Day. My husband and I spent a peaceful afternoon at my in laws. That evening, we celebrated the day be partaking in the town festivities which included free sausages provided by the village government. Oh, and I can't forget the complimentary wine and beer provided by the village, as well. Yes, tax dollars were spent on beer and wine. I don't know why I was surprised. I mean after all, in Die Schweiz, wine is served at school parties when parents are invited. Last year I observed a school in Denmark that had a teacher's desk with a bottle of wine on it. This is all sooo very Europe.

Ironing Boards...hmmm?

Ok, so today I was in one of the neighborhood grocery stores... when I noticed this...

IRONING BOARDS!
Many of you recall my dilemma regarding parting with 100.00 Swiss Francs to purchase an ironing board. Well, today I stumbled upon two ironing boards for 68.00 CHF ($65.70) and 48.00 CHF ($46.40). Both appeared to be made quite well; of excellent quality. Both were sturdy and heavy and included iron rests.

Needless to say, I left the store without an ironing board. Not because of the price, but simply because I wasn't in the mood to purchase one. Forty-eight Swiss Francs is not 98.00 CHF. I will save fifty bucks! When I eventually get it...

Currently, I am creating a list of what I miss about the States. Today, that list got a little longer...I miss being able to purchase 10 ears of corn for $1. Or four for $1.

Does crime exist in Switzerland? Yes, of course it does.
If you recall my post, Doing Time...SwissStyle http://kiki-in-switzerland.blogspot.com/2010/07/doing-timeswiss-style.html, the photos of the Swiss prisons sum it all up. Yes, crime exists, but it's almost nonexist in Die Schweiz. Switzerland has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. And coming from me, a person who lived on the Southside of Chicago, I'm relishing in this fact. My apologies to those who may think that I'm knocking Chicago, but truth be told...you know damn well that Chicago, with all its beauty, is a mess! Eighteen shootings in a 24 hour period, 40 shootings in one weekend (June 2010). Enough with that! I digress...

Back to Switzerland and my relishing...

Since moving here, some of my security habits have changed: Although, I live on the 3rd floor, I don't have a problem with leaving the balconey door open when I hop to the store; I will walk a few blocks (Switzerland doesn't actually have blocks, but you get the gist) with money in my hand; I will keep my car running when I run into the post office. Come on! Really!

Just look at the photo I took when I moved to Switzerland this past winter. I was so amazed that items were left outside of the grocery store after closing hours that I took a picture and emailed it to my family explaining the craziness that is Switzerland (or maybe it's me who's crazy). And these are not measly items, as you can see.

Now, what's really going on in Switzerland; many are not happy because crime is on the rise. And truth be told, study after study shows that the foreigners are to blame. According to the Swiss Police Crime Statics:

51% of Injury (I'm assuming this means assault) are perpetraded by foreigners

59% Intentional Homicide

54% Purse Snatching

56% Restraint / Kidnapping

62% Rape

59% Trade in Drugs

This angers me on so many levels. ONE, b/c I believe that if people are productive and make a contribution to a nation then they should be welcomed. But one rotten apple spoils a bunch and that's how it goes. We live in a world of how things are, not how they should be, and unfortunately the unlawful actions of a few makes it harder for the rest. TWO, Switzerland is known for having a large practice for accepting asylum seekers. In other words, they want to help those who have to flee their home country. If foreigners, many asylum seekers, continue to do unlawful activities, the desire to help others will change. And actually, it already is. Oh and THREE, this is very selfish, but I'm a foreigner and I don't want to have a negative label hanging over me. A few people have told me that being an American is "different". But most Swiss don't know I'm American until I open my mouth.

So what does this mean...?? First, the Swiss don't play games. They are forcing deportation, starting with Nigerians.

Why the Nigerians? "They are coming here to seek asylum, but to do illegal business," according to Alard du Bois-Reymond, new director of the Swiss Federal Migration Office. "Many of them drift into petty crime and deal drugs. It's a sad fact." Therefore, according to the Swiss, they have to go. In 2009, only one Nigerian asylum seeker was granted asylum, six were granted temporary stays, and 1800 were rejected. Now, I can count on one hand the number of Nigerians I know, have known, have met, in other words not many, but I'm sure that out of 1800+, a lot more than seven are trustworthy... a looottttt more. But this is where the rotten apples comes into play. It's sad, it's disgusting. Are Nigerians being fingered? Yes, definitely...thanks rotten apple.

This is what I have to say, my own little observations. Those from other African nations are not seen as "trouble." Also those from war torn Sri Lanka (FYI, in Switzerland, they are also considered black, like Africans, like me) are accepted, no problem. Also, people from the Balkans are seen as high participates of criminal activity. Another personal observation which I think hurts the Nigerians is that they hang out at the stores, train stations in packs making noise; doing what may be normal to them in Nigeria. And this may not seem as a big deal to us Americans, but the reserved Swiss don't make noise and don't hang "on corners." Seriously.

I wrote this post because the Swiss are going to have another referendum in November which will call for all foreigners who have been convicted of a serious crime to be sent back to their home country IMMEDIATELY. (A little side note, Switzerland is a direct democracy. Therefore, citizens can override any parliamentary decision with a vote. Imagine if the US had this system back during slavery or the Civil Rights Movement. I would probably be picking cotton right now instead of writing this post). Looking by one of the campaign posters, you can figure out what will happen.

To be honest, I'm not against sending trouble makers home. But I have to admit, it bothers me to the core to know that those who are here doing the right thing will be negatively labeled or prevented from coming here due to the behavior of a some and prejudices of others. Who's fault is that?

Upon moving to Switzerland, I immediately fell in love with the architecture. Instead of tall buildings and skyscrapers, of which I am accustomed to, my eyes were drawn to the stunning cathedrals, churches and chapels that seem to litter every inch of this country.

Church steeples are the tallest structures in most villages, towns, and cities. And they are everywhere. I cannot walk more than half a mile without having the pleasure of seeing a beautiful church; many of which were built centuries ago, and suitable to Swiss fashion, many of the church bells ring every 15 minutes. (The Swiss truly value time)

Being able to look in every direction and see such beauty makes me believe I'm in heaven.

Playing It Cool

Crazy, but in Switzerland, I often find myself having to play it cool.

Often, I have come across or have been made aware of customs, regulations, and policies that will never be accepted nor permitted in the US. Yes, I know I am not in the US. Yes, I know this is to be expected. After all, I am an American expat living in Der Schweiz.

Trust me, I try my best to embrace the Swiss way of life:

I don't vacuum after 6 pm. The Swiss value quiet and serenity ~ the roaring sound of a vacuum cleaner can be very disturbing.
I greet others with 3 pecks on the cheek.
I try to speak softly. Being from Jersey, this can be quite difficult.
I drink out of a glass not a bottle. My husband told me that only men drink out of a bottle. And please be aware that I am referring to a water bottle.
I cross the street at designated crosswalks. And I wait until the light turns green. Being from Jersey, this can be quite difficult.
I don't mention nor complain when my food order is wrong.

This is all very Swiss.

However, there are a few things that will never fly in America. Take these for example:

When applying for a job in Switzerland, your resume must contain your photo and your date of birth. In some cases, employments ads will indicate an age range that the employer will accept for a position. Now, there are jobs in the US that may specify age...ummm...maybe a nanny position (I'm assuming). But I can't think of any others. In Switzerland, any job/position, no matter the field, may specify an age.

Less than a year ago, the Swiss voted against allowing more mosques to be built with minarets. There are mosques in Switzerland with minarets, but after the vote all mosques must be built w/o minarets. Ok, that's how they want it. But what caused my mouth to drop were the posters shown above. When I visited Switzerland last November, these posters were everywhere. Not knowing about the upcoming referendum, I assumed the posters were a radical display to frighten people. And yes, it moved and frightened me. But it was actually a campaign tactic used by those opposing the minarets. So I guess their tactic worked.

Anyhooo, would this have been permissible in the US? I think not. I know not. But this is Switzerland and I have to play it cool.

Visual Stimulation

One of the reasons why I write a blog is to entice my family and friends to visit me in Switzerland. So that means, carrying my camera everywhere I go (I figure visual stimulation will do the trick). The downside is that I look like a tourist.

Today's visual stimuli is food!! To be honest, what makes Swiss food quite delicious is that it's fresh. I don't think there is such a thing as Swiss cuisine. At least not like French or Italian cuisine. But the food is good! Guten Appetit.

We were served coffee at the bank. It's quite nice. However, the Swiss do operate at a snail's pace. A matter that may take 30 mins in the States can take twice as long in Der Schweiz. So a nice cup of coffee softens the wait.

Next, we decided to grab a bite to eat with friends. I had the fried fish. My husband ate ostrich. Yes, ostrich. I've had it a few times. It's quite good.

Then, of course, our favorite. We later treated ourselves to ice cream. This ice cream is homemade and DeLiCious !!

Ironing Board?...We Don't Need No Stinking Ironing Board!

Yes people, I don't have an ironing board. And I refuse to get one. So far, the least expensive ironing board I've come across costs 98.00 CHF= US$93.00!!! I just can't do it! The idea of parting with nearly 100 bucks to pay for a BOARD! terrifies me.

According to The Economist's 2009 Worldwide Cost of Living Survey, two of the World's top 10 most expensive cities are in Switzerland. In other words, it costs a grip to live in the land of cheese and chocolate.

I must admit, after spending 30+ years in the US paying reasonable prices for items, I struggle with having to reach in my wallet to pull out an arm and a leg to pay for the basic things. I mean, I come from a retail culture of Macy's One Day Sales (60% off + coupon + Macy's credit card = A STEAL!), Target and Walmart, Black Friday, After Christmas Day Sales...all of which equals spoiled American.

Let's face it, if the daily ATM limit is 5000 CHF; that means you live in an expensive country. Whenever the highest bank note is 1000 CHF and wherever you go the retailer can make change; you live in an expensive country. When a 10% mark down causes a mad rush; you live in an expensive country. I mean, I still have to get use to paying extra for ketchup at Mickey Ds.

No, I'm not being cheap; it's just a big pill to swallow... 98.00 CHF! Yes, it may take longer to iron on the table with a sheet and my clothes may still have a wrinkle or two, but at least I still have 100 bucks in my pocket.

It appears that Obama may have a little Swiss in him.

Some in the small Swiss village of Ried bei Kerzers claim that Hans Gutknecht, who was born in the village in the late 1690s, is an ancestor of President Obama. This would make him Obama's seventh great grandfather on his mother's side.

The Swiss, like most in Europe, are fond of Obama. As for me, wellllll...he's ~~better than Bush~~ doing his thing. I must admit I ~~expected more~~ am proud of him.

I will say that it's stress-free not having to be apart of the US political climate, AT THE MOMENT! The Republicans are BOLDLY showing their asses. And the Dems are punking out... But I digress.

I know things will get better. But in the meantime, I think it's exciting to know that ~~wherever I go, FABULOUS things happen~~ Obama may have a little Swiss in him ~~like me~~!

Today, my husband and I decided to hop the FABULOUS Swiss Train and head to Ticino in Southern Switzerland.

Ticino, a Swiss state that borders Italy, definitely resembles its neighbor to the south. When entering Ticino it felt as if we were entering Italy; most people speak Italian and the pizza was delizioso!

Ticino is full of palm trees, vineyards, and clear blue skies. Not what many would expect in Switzerland.

No, these are not the offices of the international research centers nor the private sector science and technology corporations that the Swiss are widely recognized for...these are state prisons. Yes, violent (and non-violent) criminals reside in these plush, modern dwellings that only the Swiss tax payer will approve of.

Switzerland has one of the lowest crime rates in the world (can't you tell by the pictures). I remember when I first realized how safe Switzerland is...I was walking to the train station after dark in the winter with my hood on...meaning I didn't have peripheral vision. I would have never done that in the states.

So we did the tourist-thing and spent the day...On Top of Europe...at Jungfraujoch. In German: jungfrau means virgin or young woman, joch means yoke.

It took us less than four hours to travel from our house to the top at an elevation of 11,782 ft. It was about 30 degrees fahrenheit..soooo.. I was cool in my sweater and jacket! The warm sun rays kept us comfortable.

The Swiss Army!

Yes, Switzerland is neutral, but they still don't mess around. Men are required to do military service at the age of 19 for 21 weeks of basic training. They take part in mandatory military training, and are considered "soldiers" from the age of 19 to 34. Meaning...if shit pops off, all men aged 19-34 are drafted. After training, as part of their militia obligations, they are required to keep their weapons at home. Switzerland has one of the highest militia gun ownership rates in the world.

This past week has been busy and exciting.

First, we traveled to Austria for three days. Michi went diving. I spent time chatting with my sis-in-law, strolling, and taking in the sites. Austria is a beautiful country. The area we visited, Ferienland, is very religious. It is filled with beautiful Catholic cathedrals, churches, and chapels. We also saw many religious fountains, monuments, and symbols. Many residents had the crucifix or religious paintings on the front of their homes. While diving, my husband also discovered a crucifix and a Madonna statue placed under water, in the lake. Actually, in Austria, the word HELLO is Gruss Gott which means Hello God.

Well, not really. My little sis, who is 5 minutes younger than me, has complained about opening the hundreds of email images I send her a day. So I decided to write a blog. It is still in its beginning stage, but at least it's up and running.

I hope by writing this blog that I will be able to share my new Swiss experiences with my family and friends.

Moving to Switzerland from NJ via Chicago via ATL via NJ has not been that much of a culture shock. So far, I love the Swiss customs and the Swiss people. I just go with the flow!
